Downtown LA; Audi’s new Diesel Sidewalk ads

We @ Small Cars only Love Diesel’s.    Yeah, everyone remembers the time when you or or neighbor had a loud, smoky Mercedes diesel.    But we all kept them in the family because they were reliable, efficient (our 82 300sd Turbo Diesel averaged 26 mpg until we got rid of in in 1999)  and was devoid of any kind of fun; making it the perfect first hand me down car.

Most of these cars got a chance at a second life with biodiesel, and became hipster status symbols in Silverlake, Brooklyn or parts of the bay area.   While still very cool, diesel was still kinda dirty.

New diesel’s dont have that problem, nor is California’s ancient law (that has now been removed) forbidding new diesel’s being sold.   Also, new diesels with urea are cleaner than the predecessors, while putting out some major torque.   VW’s new campaign with its talking VW BUG is cute, but Audi’s guerilla marketing tactics are much more suave.

The stencils do not use chalk, but just a high pressure washer, so the words are just “cleaned” into the street.    +1 for Audi.   Watcha you got BMW 335d?

Mcdonald’s to Offer Electric Car Charging Stations

Last thing I want to do is give McDonald’s a free plug (I avoid their food like pinkberry and the plague!)  - and must we remember that Walmart did it back in the mid 90s?   I’m not sure what their target demo is, but something tells me its not a CTO in Silcon Valley.

Mcdonald’s will open its first ‘green’ restaurant in cary, north carolina, USA.  Constructed from eco-friendly materials and technologies, the restaurant will include ChargePoint™ networked charging stations from coulomb technologies, a benefit for those of you out there with electric cars. By partnering with novacharge the new mcdonald’s will give electric vehicle drivers somewhere to recharge their vehicles
while having a meal.  The ‘greener’ mcdonald’s is set to open july 14th.

Why must McDonald’s go down this path?   Probably to encourage the more eco friendly to visit their restaurant and eat their delicious food.    What does one do when your car is charging for one hour in the parking lot?

Worlds Smallest Taxi; BMW Isetta

Everyone remembers Steve Urkel in his BMW Isetta.
Why Family Matters back in the early 90s decided to go with a rare, European hatch for a “nerd” mobile is beyond me. However, it gave more attention to these tiny little things, as most of America still hasn’t seen one. The only access [...]

Kia Soul commerical vs Nissan Cube commerical. Who wins?

Since the Scion xB lost the battle of the cubes, and now is dethroned, Nissan and Kia have been waging their own battles. Both have competent cars (all the major sites have done comparos by now), but which commercial would get you off your tush to the dealership to test drive one? Lets [...]

Is Hybrid Car Only Parking out of Style?

Hybrid only Parking.    Yeah, I use to be impressed when stores and local business cared about things I cared about.   In this case, hybrids had preferential parking over non-hybrids @ my local Fresh and Easy. (Don’t worry, Fresh and Easy, I still < 3 you guys)
Obviously, people don’t care anymore.   Unless this is a special [...]

NYT – “Car-less in America”

Yeah,  a lot of us who hate big cars also hate suburbia.   For a lot of us, we imagine that the dreams of a white picket fence, mcmansions (5K+ square feet) and starbucks on every corner are part of the reason we got in this mess in the first place.
